A Message From Helen’s Grandson
Hi everyone. I grew up listening to my grandmother laughing with her best friend Margaret on the phone. Grandma was never at a loss for words and her stories were priceless. Then Margaret moved to Maine…
I started this blog for my grandmother for two reasons. First, I wanted to capture her words and stories for our family to have as a tribute to her for many years to come. I told her it would be like scrapbooking with a computer. Second, I thought it might give her something fun to do with her friend and keep her young at heart. I think it is working.
I encourage you to consider starting a blog for yourself or your family. It’s easier than you think. Just go to www.wordpress.com and follow the directions. It’s free. I think there are other blog services out there as well. And if you have someone like Helen in your life, it doesn’t take long to show them how to do it. Trust me, you’ll never regret it regardless of what they blog about.
I never thought it would get this popular because there are lots of blogs out there (like my personal one) that never get seen by more than just the blogger(s) who write them. However, if you are worried about that, it is very easy to make your blog private or only available to an approved list. So don’t be scared. Get your own blog and then get your parents and even your grandparents to start blogging as well. Your family will have a keepsake for years to come.
Happy blogging.
With love to my “cool” Grandma,
Matthew
PS. If you do have a Helen in your life and she has a blog, post a link below. I know Maraget and Helen will enjoy reading them.
Matthew-
Thank you for getting your grandmother blogging!!! Neither of my grandmothers would (will) even touch a computer.

Matthew-
Thanks for getting your grandmother and Margaret to blog. Helen’s a hoot. A friend in FL send me the site and I sent it on to almost everyone in my address book-primarily in the NE but also to CA, AZ, CO and AK.
BTW, a new study that has come out says that seniors who use the Internet are more likely to stay mentally sharp longer. (I’m 64.)

Hey Matthew,
Thank you for getting your Grandma Helen into the blogosphere. Clear writing that is also funny is so rare it’s great to be able to read it! For those of us who don’t have the joy of still having grandparents in our lives it’s an extra treat. Maybe you could set up a spot for some pie recipes too!
BTW what is it with Helens? My grandma was one too and also fiesty. My favorite story is pre-pre my birth. My grandfather was involved in getting the autoworkers union going in their city and some “guys” were sent to dissuade him from this by using a car to break both his legs. Gaga Helen spent that night sitting on the porch with an axe in her lap and I know if they’d been stupid enough to show up at the house I’d have an even better story to tell!
Love your Helen everyone, tell her that you do and hug her as often as you can that’s something you’ll never regret!

Matthew, thanks for the info. As I was reading this blog, I wanted to start my own for my far-flung family. It’s better than communicating with one person at a time. When I get it set up, I will definitely post my link; although, I don’t think it will be nearly as insightful or entertaining as your grandmother’s blog.

Hi Matthew-
My grandma is 104 and very feisty and fun – she lives in her own apartment, is very independent, and takes very good care of herself (nails perfect, never let her hair get gray!, fashionable). She’s really an inspiration. Feisty is good!!!
My 76 year old mom has her own political blog (she never blogged before this election – or should I say before Sarah Palin was nominated).

I’m so glad you taught your grandma how to blog – I taught my mom as well!

I only discovered the blog last weekend through WordPress, and boy am I glad I found it. Bless your heart Matthew for bringing this amazing talent to the world. I want to be just like her when I grow up! (I’m only 66 and counting.) I discovered blogging nearly two years ago, and while I intended it to be a little hobby, it’s become far more. I tried to quit but couldn’t stay away. While my blog pales by comparison, I’d love Helen & Margaret to know I’ve included a link to their blog in my sidebar blogroll at: http://wintersong.wordpress.com

I discovered your grandma’s blog yesterday, featured on WordPress. She is my idol. What a great sense of humor. I am trying to put her on my links, for my blog (I’m 60) htttp://savanvleck.wordpress.com I’ll get it to stick in there yet.
I started a blog for my mother, featuring her poetry. She is 86 and still writing, but does get confused about blogging. The thing is, she really gets a kick out of people commenting on her poetry; so I post a poem every day and she can check it and see the comments: She is at: http://padairvanvleck.wordpress.com

If Sarah Palin is a bitch, what do you call Michele Obama whose college thesis was a rant against the white race. Obviously your age is destroying your ability to judge people of true character, and you have chosen to go down the path of the uninformed, lying left. Try to organize your brain cells and remember that there is a place in hell for women who do not support other women. Of course, living in Florida, you should have no problem dealing with the heat when you get there.

Dolores – “there’s a place in hell for women who don’t support other women” I’m guessing based on the nasty things you said to Helen that you are “supporting” the woman named Palin in the name of supporting all women. For me women, as members of the human race, are a wonderful mix of ideas and actions. Your requirement of supporting any woman just because she is a woman is asking me to abdicate our sex’s membership in that larger human race group – which is sort of sexist don’t you think?
You mention a paper by Michelle Obama – first I’ve heard of it why don’t you post link. Isn’t she a woman? Maybe she doesn’t count as one for you due to her race? Does not supporting her mean you’ll spend eternity in hell?
What if we just deal with Ms. Palin and Helen – hmm here we have two women with different ideas and attitudes. How do I know which one I should “support” to keep myself out of hell? Or do you not view Helen as a woman due to her age? I do, I’m proud to support her and have no worries about the after life. Helen and I will be OK as she lives in TX not FL and I live in CA – both have dry heat (like hell) and we all know what a brain stopper humidity is.
Thanks again Matthew and Helen!

I just discovered your website or blog, or whatever it’s called. Love love love it!!!
Here is some food for thought. I’m a physician who treats patients who are injured in auto accidents. In addition to their back and neck injuries, many of them have what we call “mild traumatic brain injuries” (MTBI). Some of them recover almost completely, but some of them are never quite the same. It’s not uncommon for such a patient so say, “I just got stupid”.
If a patient has had more than one MTBI, the affect is not additive, it is exponential. Each new brain trauma multiplies the deficits of the previous injury.
So why am I bringing this up. Well, my patients have only been injured in auto accidents. Bad enough, God knows.
Now let’s look at John McCain’s health history. I’m not talking about his recurrent Multiple Myeloma. I’m talking about his MULTIPLE TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURIES (MTBI). After all, he crashed jets–at least 4 of them, maybe 6. The last crash in Viet Nam was the biggie. Even broke his leg and both arms. Can’t imagine that he escaped that crash without a significant brain injury. Make sense?
And then, there are his 5 years at the Hanoi Hilton. I don’t know how often he was tortured. Let’s give him a pass and say that it was only 1 time a month for 5 years. That would be 60…let me repeat…SIXTY savage beatings. I seriously doubt that there was a rule that said, Beat a prisoner anywhere you like, but spare the head. So we can assume that John, God help him, was beaten unconscious at least 60 times during that 5 years. That would constitute 60 TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURIES, on top of those caused by the jet crashes. On top of the 1964 car crash in which (it is whispered) someone in the car with him was fatally injured. He was taken to the Navy hospital with serious injuries. Another MTB!?
Medical literature has a description of people with multiple traumatic brain injures. They are impulsive, emotionally unstable, quick to flash to anger and suffer with anxiety and depression. They also have a hard time multi-tasking. I guess that’s why John had to leave the campaign trail so he could “concentrate” on the financial crisis in Washington that he helped to create… He couldn’t do TWO THINGS at the same time. Under extreme conditions of stress, multitasking is almost impossbile for someone with multiple MTBI’s. Being President might be just a little stressful. Ya think??
McCain’s reputation precedes him. He is the poster child for people with multiple MTBI’s.
So if you want to keep calling John McCain an ass, be my guest. But I give you permission (not that you needed it or asked for it…) to call him a BRAIN INJURED ASS. That is actually a more accurate and medically correct label. And in my medical opinion, that makes him even more dangerous than George Doubya. And that’s sayin’ something.
And don’t get me started on Ms. Alaskan Barbie…
Thanks for listening. I feel better already.

What a brilliant idea! Oh, how I wish I’d have thought of this before my beloved Father passed away. BUT…I still have my Mom.
As soon as I read this post, I called her (she’s in Atlanta) and I’m in the midwest. I asked her if she’d be willing to get her thoughts/opinion and ideas out on the internet and her answer was an immediate YES!
She has a computer, yet, doesn’t have anyone close that can help her navigate through WordPress. So, I told her if she can just email her thoughts/opinions/stories, etc…to me, I’ll get it up and running.
To simply say thank you for such a wonderful idea is an understatement of vast proportions.
Kindest Regards,

Helen and Margaret’s Blog just made the Nov 2nd “Blog of the Week” list in the San Francisco Chronicle.
Congratulations to you Matthew for setting it up. Your grandmother is a “Light in in the wilderness” of politics. I am grateful I took the time to check it out. Like many, it makes this 65 year old grandmother consider that blogging might be a good way to share a legacy of ideas and stories for my “grands” who are age 3 and 5.

Dear Margaret and Helen:
thank you so much for writing as you do.
You have inspired me to start a blog of my own with wordpress and I am having such a good time!
So much to get off my chest, this is way better than therapy!
Regarding the real estate agent who made a lot of money until two years ago: it is amazing that he has not connected the dots…his making a lot of money, along with banks who did not do their homework and financial institutions who packaged and sold wothless paper, was a direct cause of the demise of the housing and financial markets! Does he not understand that had he and a lot of other people made a little less money then, he would probably be able to hold on to his job now? Does he not know that the Republican administration was directly involved in believing that a completely unregulated market would regulate itself and not falter? Not that Democrats are blameless, but what planet is this man living on if he does not understand how the first 6 years of Bush contributed to the last two years?
I just do not get these people…
There, I got it off my chest…
With affection and admiration,

I’ve loved every blog I’ve read so far. Thanks for sharing your insights and wisdom. Seems often times that common sense and getting to the root of an issue is too complicated for most people. I blog on a disabled site and have run into this too often. Comprehension seems to be the biggest problem. People read but they don’t comprehend.
Thanks to you also Matthew. I lost both my grandmothers when I was very young. I don’t want to adopt yours but I do thank you for “lending” her and Margaret to all of us.

I would be thrilled to have either (or both!) of these ladies as my grandmother. Are either of them open to adopting a middle-aged lesbian?
In fact, it is my goal now to be this kind of “cool” granny one day. I’ve got to get my son working on this …
Keep it up, ladies!

Matthew,
Looks like your grandma has riled a few hate-mongers w/ her spot-on, speak-the-truth, call-a-dog-a-dog comments. We may need you to monitor, delete, & block a few of the more hateful commenters….you know, the dittoheads and Caribou-Barbie-Worshipers who spew hatefulness, hurtfulness, and deviseness.
Thanks for helping us keep this blog a place for thoughtful reading & insightful commenting rather than a place for spewing bigotry, racism, and hate.
As Helen has graciously stated in the past, even idiots are welcome to post comments here – but there’s no need for the likes of swittersb, history chaser, indievoter, dan, and all their troll-buddies to come here and spew hate.

Hey, here’s a fund-raising idea…H&M could start a “Virtual Grandma” website, where granny-less people could sign up to be grannied by professional grandmas, like H&M.
If the virtual grannies didn’t want to make any money off of it, they could “charge” a donation to their favorite charity.
Just an idea…

Love the blog! What a grandma!
With your expertise, why not set up a site giving us all the opportunity to help Rove out with his new book which promises to “name names” of all of the people who didn’t support Bush when the supreme court decided he won the election. You could help Rove save research costs by allowing us to sign our names up. Might add a few more pages to his book though.

Hi Matthew I just discovered your grandmother’s blog today via a link. I am 73 and have been blogging now for almost two years.
When my mother died I felt there were so many things I never learned about her and now I could not even ask. So I decided that I would write a blog that perhaps my two children might be interested in after I am gone. Neither of them read it now.
It is called Nobody Important and that’s the truth but I think of it as places I’ve been, things I do/did and hopefully they will be of interest to my children and maybe even a few more people. Somehow it ended up as so much more, although I don’t blog about politics but I do blog about books on occasion.
I started it off myself, with the help of a book and online research and have learned as I went along. I never hesitated to ask someone and bloggers are amazingly helpful people. Somehow I even ended up as a the administrator of a group of international bloggers so it has been an interesting experience.
Not only that but through blogging I met someone who got me interested in Second Life, a virtual world where I also spend a lot of time. I rent a house there and attend lectures and poetry readings and find it a fascinating place.
I think your grandmother is a very admirable person and it is great that she has so much verve and she has something interesting to say to more than your family. I’m very glad I found her blog and will add it to my bloglines feed.

On my father’s 80th birthday, I bought him a computer. He went to the local community college to learn the basics and just had a blast. It was wonderful emailing with him. He passed away in 1999, sharp as a tack at 84 and I miss him (and his emails!) very much.

I just have to agree with all the positive responses here.
Like a lot of people on here, I am starting a blog myself. I’m one of those outspoken Grandma’s too…and I’m sure one grandson will be really shocked when he gets the link to MY blog….LOL…
Thanks to all of you for your openess and insight. President Obama will be a LARGE part of MY blog…how I see him, his wife, his grandma, his darling girls…he changed my life in 2004…I KNEW then that he would be OUR PRESIDENT!
Think I will put in some ideas on volunteering..cause before 2004, that’s the LAST thing I ever would have done…found a good cause/person/platform, and have never veered from that direction.
Thanks again…

A big thumb’s up to “the girls.” I’ve just turned fifty and hoping I’m learning to be as outspoken as much a “Helen-Wheels” as your grandma when I catch up to her age (she doesn’t seem to be getting any older). I was mad enough to spit nails when Sarah Palin came on the scene, and it prompted me to include one of the few political posts on my blog too (not nearly as humorously or well-written as Helen’s). If that blasted woman did nothing else, she DID bring us all together. You could go to “Helen-Back” and not find another (thank goodness!) I was afraid we were headed to “Helen A Handbasket” for a while, but thanks to good senses of humor like your Granny, we got through it. Hugs from Alabama,

Dear Matthew,
First, thank you for what you have done here. What a gift to us all.
Second, I have edited and will soon have published a book titled “I Didn’t Get Old Being Stupid!” It’s a collection of true short stories about profound learning experiences from all stages of life written entirely by self-described Elders. The book’s subtitle really tells it all: Directions For Life’s Journey From Folks Who’ve Made The Trip.
I’d love to have a story in there from Helen. I have tried to invite her to contribute, but I don’t know if my e-mail ever reached her. I will certainly respect any decision she makes regarding participation in the project. Could you please forward this note to the correct location for her to read it?
Anyone who cares to can get an overview of the book by visiting elders-wisdom.com (don’t forget the dash). There are some sample stories there that are worth the visit just on their own, I promise.
Thanks, again.

Matthew, your grandmother’s wit is evident in her posts so I can see why you want to preserve examples of it in a blog.
My website started as a means to promote my novel STAY SAFE, BUDDY (A Story of Humor and Horror During the Korean War). However, it has evolved into more of a listing of “Helpful Hints” that I find here and there but mostly on the Internet. For example I posted this subject today: “How to Save $50.00 per Day.”
Thanks for providing the means for us to enjoy the wit of your grandmother and her lifelong friend.

A friend sent me the link to your blog, specifically your book review of the DAnn Coulter book. Yep, I typed DAnn because I think this is a man dressed as a woman. S(He) not only has huge feet but has an Adam’s apple to match!
I posted a link to your book review and a friend immediately came back and accused me of doing this blog! My name happens to be Margaret and my friend thought I was pulling a fast one by posting as Helen! LOL Don’t I wish I had Helen’s talent!
The part that made my friend think it was me was the blog entry entitled “Kiss my 83 year old ass”! LMAO! I am 65 and one of my favourite comments is “Kiss my ample ass”! I hope I can write something so inspiring when I am 83!
I do have a blog:

I’m only a year younger than your grandmother so I have a good idea how she sees things, – honestly and without a lot of bullhockey tossed into the mix. I’ve been a blogger for many years, actually started when they were called discussion groups or webrings. When they first started they were filled with so much mindless blather that I was bold enough to predict that they would go out of business. Unfortunately I didn’t count on the low expectations of the blogger class.
Mostly I’ve stuck with political blogs but they have become completely predictable and practically uninformative. I’ve been on Huffpost pretty much since it started but am about to give it up because it is essentially unmonitored and the whackos have taken it over. There are so many idiots taking one-line pot shots at other idiots that it is almost worthless because the actual subject gets lost in the flurry of insults.
But since redsicovering your site, I think I might be around for a while.

I was just introduced to Grandma Helen’s blog and I’ll be reading it regularly from now on. Matthew, you’ve given new life to the phrase “respect your elders”. If more people thought and spoke with the same clarity and wisdom as Helen, I’d argue less about that phrase. Dear Margaret & Helen,
I have enjoyed so much reading your recent blogs because it’s a wonderful change from what passes for civil and reflective “discourse” here in Savannah, Georgia. I’m retired Army and I was the City Manager for Tybee Island (Savannah’s beach resort), so I’ve developed a thick hide, but the aggressive ignorance here has been wearing. I write a column for The Tybee News called “Over The Horizon,” so I’ve got a chance to reflect on events affecting Tybee and the nation. I’ll be checking your blog out on a regular basis; Molly Ivins took a level headed look at the world and I miss her. I don’t know if you’re familiar with the educator John W. Garner, but your blogs seem inspired by one of his quotes: “I sometimes think that history might easily say about this nation: It was a great nation full of talented people with enormous energy who forgot that they needed one another.” Ladies, my best to you and good blogging!!

Matt, you’re a good grandson, and I hope someday to have one just like you. And your grandmother is a peach – pretty much the only lady my mom’s age who can make me holler, “Hell, YES!” especially after the dogs have gone to sleep… (It’s risky business, hollering after the bedtime of two spoiled rotten rat terriers who are, at least functionally speaking, your basic three-year-old kids.)

I told everyone who reads my blog about your grandmother’s blog, although I may have misidentified her. I love that these women have maintained a friendship for so long and have so much common sense to pass along. I wish President Obama would appoint them as advisors to his cabinet. Matthew,
One of the reasons I enjoy your Grandmother’s blog is that she combines so well her distaste for fools, grifters, and charlatans with a deep love of this country that seems too often in thrall to these very types. During the time your Grandmother and my Mother grew up, women weren’t supposed to have opinions, thoughts, or brains. Fortunately that time has passed, though we still have a long way to go. Common sense is not universal, but it helps all who will listen to it. The best to you this day and always.
